Zerona has arrived at Ology!

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Zerona has arrived!  It’s been on Nightline, the Rachel Ray show,  in Harpers Bazaar and Allure, yet I have to admit I was a skeptic – anytime a treatment seems too good to be true, it typically is.  However, after seeing the results our patients have had and talking with staff that have had the treatment as well, I’ve become a believer.

How does Zerona work?

If you would imagine making a tiny hole in a balloon and watching it deflate as the air escapes, then you will have a basic idea of how the treatment works.  Zerona is basically a ‘cold’ or low-level laser that targets fat cells.  The laser moves painlessly through the skin and creates a small pore in the fat cell itself, allowing the fat to drain out of the cell.  This excess fat is then passed out of the body through normal, ongoing detoxification.  This allows us to ‘spot reduce’ certain areas of the body without the need for any invasive procedure.  It does not remove the fat cell itself – it removes the contents of the cell, thereby slimming the treated area.  It’s not painful, but it does require a time commitment, and a strong commitment to adhere to some basic protocols in order for the treatment to work as well as possible.

The studies behind the science show that 80% of patients who have been treated with Zerona lost over six inches, and that on average, patients lost an additional 6.8 inches combined from their knees, neck, upper arms, and bra-line.  Treatments sessions consist of six, nine, or twelve treatments spaced about 48 hours apart.  The sessions are 40 minutes in length, with half of the time allowed for the front of the body and half for the back of the body.   In order for Zerona to really be effective, you’ll have to commit to the schedule and make sure that more than 72 hours does not pass between your treatments.

There is a double benefit to really embracing some of the other elements for success in the Zerona program as they can serve as a ‘starting point’ for long-term lifestyle changes:

  1. Hydrate.  It’s simple; it’s basic and you’ve heard it before.  While on the Zerona protocol, you will need to consume at least 64 ounces of water per day to promote the detoxification process.  A dehydrated body and a sluggish lymphatic system will not product good results.  It’s important to note that WATER is the requirement – not soda (diet or otherwise), coffee, or tea.
  2. Eat a reasonable diet that is low in fat and high in fiber.  Again, simple steps.  Don’t overindulge, and definitely don’t fall under the impression that the Zerona treatment will allow you to eat what you please.  It’s not a weight loss treatment, and cutting back on fatty, sugary foods is required.
  3. No alcohol during the course of treatment.  Results will not be their best, and alcohol consists of ‘empty calories’.
  4. Supplement your diet with Curva®.  Curva® contains a proprietary blend that promotes detoxification and is included with your Zerona Treatment series.
  5. Move!  If you don’t have a work out regimen, walk briskly at least ten minutes each day – more if possible.  Again, this helps promote detoxification and will also increase your desire to hydrate.  If you absolutely cannot work out, wear a compression garment over the area being treated (such as Spanx).
  6. Keep your appointments on schedule.  It’s very important to keep the window as close to 48 hours between treatments as possible.

Does Zerona replace liposuction or SmartLipo?

No.  Zerona is ideal for slimming areas of the body that are exercise resistant, but remember- it shrinks the fat cells; it does not remove them.  For some patients, Zerona will not produce enough benefits to outweigh the benefits of liposuction or SmartLipo.  For patients who are fairly active, maintain their body weight and eat well – but still have trouble spots, Zerona may prove to be final step in achieving their best body ever.

Call us today to reserve your private consultation – we’ll help you determine if Zerona is right for you.

These aren’t your mother’s falsies: Eyelash Extensions

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

When I tell my guests that I do eyelash extensions I always hear the same two questions…..how is it done and how long do they last?  We then get into a lively discussion about how wonderful it would be to go without mascara, get up in the morning and go to the gym looking like you have on make-up, and how great it would be to finally add some “flutter” to their eyes.

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent lashes attached in a single strand to your individual lashes one at a time.  They are weightless and curved to closely replicate a natural lash.  Each lash is attached using a surgical adhesive that was originally designed to be used to close incisions during surgical procedures. This adhesive is extremely lightweight and flexible, which gives you a terrific soft,  natural feel to your lashes.  If applied correctly, it is nearly impossible to detect where the natural and artificial lash begin and end.

Which brings me to my next point…..you get what you pay for when it come to eyelash extensions.  Because this is very painstaking, detailed work and a natural look is what we all strive for, it is important to select a lash ‘stylist’ with care.  Look for a stylist that has had extensive training and is certified in her craft.  In Indiana, a lash stylist must be either a licensed aesthetician or cosmetologist.  Ask to see pictures of their work.  Ask about their training.  If you have friends who have had extensions look closely at the work.   Do they have a soft natural look or are their lashes clumpy and “gluey”?  A full set of lashes (approximately 60-80 lashes per eye) takes about two hours to apply.  Prices range from $300-$400 depending on location.  If you find a place that does them for $30 in thirty minutes you may not be pleased with the results.

When it comes to the question ‘how long do they last?’ I always tell my guests that lash extensions will naturally fall out as your natural lashes shed.  You can keep your new lashes indefinitely by coming in for “fills” about every 3-4 weeks.  This process takes about 45 min. and a typical cost is $75-$100.  Most of my lash guests are on a 4 week schedule to maintain the fullness of their lash extensions.

All lash sessions are customized for each guest.  Lashes come in different lengths, thicknesses, curls, colors and even different materials.  A good lash stylist will do a comprehensive consultation taking into consideration your eye shape and the “look” you are trying to achieve.  There are infinite variations for the finished look – from ‘Kardashian-esque’ to very natural.  By carefully selecting curls and placement, a mature eye can be “opened up”, an almond-shaped eye can achieve a rounder look and an eye with thin, pale lashes can finally practice her “flutter”.

Wake up to longer, thicker and fuller lashes every day.  Contact Ology Spa for an appointment to have your own beautiful set of natural eyelash extensions applied.  You will LOVE them!

Semi-Permanent Makeup at Ology

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I’ve had a few inquires about semi permanent makeup recently, and was intrigued by a concept that I hadn’t read about before. My first thought was that even what is known as permanent makeup is in fact actually semi-permanent. This is because the results usually start to fade around 5 years and touch ups are needed to keep the color fresh. Some people do have long lasting results that can be seen 15 or more years after the initial application, but this isn’t the norm.

It turns out, the end point a permanent makeup artist shoots for during the application process can be altered to turn permanent makeup into semi-permanent makeup. Basically when I perform a permanent makeup application, my goal is to pack as much pigment deep enough in the skin so that as the skin naturally turns over or sheds,  the pigment stays under the skin for as long as possible. The average end result should last between 3 and 10 years depending on how well the patient takes care of their new tattoo. To make the results less permanent, fewer passes are made during the application leaving less pigment implanted in the skin. Also, the treatment can be done more superficially than traditional permanent makeup. The color choice should be lighter with semi permanent makeup because darker colors tend to be more opaque even after the treatment area is healed.  The end result should last 3 months to 3 years.  Although three years in still a significant amount of time, it seems that for some people, semi-permanent feels like less of a commitment.

It is still important to be conservative when deciding on the color and design of your semi-permanent makeup. Even a few months can seem like a long time if the application is too heavy or too dark. I recommend brows to be a soft color that follows your natural brow line, and not a trendy style. For natural eyeliner, it is best to stick with a lash enhancement which is done just in the lash line. You can always add to permanent or semi permanent makeup with traditional cosmetics for a more dramatic look, but a cat eye might get old as the years go by.

Entry for Judy

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

My mother deserves to win because she is the greatest mom a person could ask for.  My mother is 62 years old and has always been there for me.

She has been through so much in her life, she has struggled to take care of her 3 daughters and her 2 grandchildren but she has always found a wayto manage.  My mother and father divorced right after I graduated from high school, she left everything she owned besides her truck, lived in a women’s abuse shelter and worked like crazy to give herself and me a better life.

As a child she worked two jobs to take care of us, she drove me to my friends, to the skating rink, to the pool.  I became pregnant at age 17,so that was one more mouth she was trying to figure out how she was going to take care of, and in an abusive situation myself.  She never scolded me about the wrongs in my life, she tried to talk me through them and realized I had to learn for myself.  She was there to support me through it all and I finally managed to break free. She always gave me encouraging words, and cards, and the pick-me-ups a teenager needed from a mother.

I had a high risk pregnancy because I was so sick and my body was trying to abort the pregnancy, I gave birth to a micro-preemie that is now 15.  My mother was in the delivery room with me when I gave birth and has helped me raise my daughter to become the teenager that she is today.  My mom has had to work multiple jobs to get by and now works overnight at a bakery.  She has never really had the chance to enjoy herself or relax and feel good about who she is.  She has always put others before her, she has taken care of others needs first. She makes sure she attends all functions for her grandchildren, even if she is worn out.  She has never been able to go out and buy nice clothes, get a massage, get a makeover or anything for herself because she is always taking care of others.

She deserves this chance.  She deserves an opportunity to feel good about herself, a chance to relax and time for herself.  My mother is my best friend, but being her daughter she doesn’t get how beautiful a person she is outside as she is inside.  I tell her but once again, I am her daughter and she thinks it is all said out of love.  She does not feel attractive anymore because her hair is thinning, her weight, her age, we are big boned in our family so we don’t have that small and petite look, and people often call her sir, yes, people call her sir, and it hurts her.

I want my mom to have a chance to know how wonderful, how beautiful, and how caring she is and that she is loved.  I am asking for your help to give her this, she is the greatest friend, a great person and most of all the best Mom.  She has taught me how to love others, love myself and at a young, teenage age, how to become a mom when times were scary and tough. I love you Mom!!!  thank you for your time.

She always helps me out giving me food and clothing when it is needed. She also never goes out that much, she helps watch my baby cousin Alex. She also works at about 3:00 in the morning and then comes home about 11:00 in the morning, earning money to support herself,me,my cousin, and her mother. My grandmother has done so much for me, and my family, she is the best grandmother a grandaughter could ask for. Most teens are self-centered and not concerned about some little bothersome cousin, but not Judy she loved us and made our lives so much richer. ok so she is one of the best people i know she drives me everywhere, everyday. she takes me to my friends the doctor you name it, and although she cannot afford things she herself needs she always seems to be able to get us our christmas presents, birthday and just a random gift and she never asks us to do anything in return, except to be quite while she sleeps ^^ i think this would be great for her she neeeds so time to relax and let someone else take care of her for a minute. she works all of the time, she gets up at two thirty am to work in a bakery which she loves but would rather be doing somthing else that is easier on her body, she then comes home at noon to nap for maybe an hour if she can she then leaves to get us everyday from school or clubs then she takes not only us home but also our friends and the takes us to the store or our homes aftter that if shes home early enough she will help cook with her mom and sister and then go to bed just to do it all over again and in the mix of all of that she will babysit other cousins let our pets out if we are away from home ect. I love my Nana with all of my heart and she deserves this treatment more than anyone else i know.

My mom deserves to win a spa treatment. From the time she became pregnant with me, she has strived to give me the best life she can. She made sure that my sisters and I experienced life. She worked two jobs to provide for our family, and still made time to spend with us. When things get tough, she just got tougher. Nothing will keep her down!
My mom is supportive of our family, even when we make the wrong decisions in life. When we have our own difficulties, she’s right there to be a shoulder to cry on, or hold our hand, or just to listen. Mom may offer her opinion, and doesn’t get offended if we don’t listen. And when it becomes apparent that we should have listened, she seldom says I told you so.
My mom has helped me, my sisters, and our children more than anyone knows. She helps by picking the kids up from school, taking them to doctors appointments, or taking organ lessons with her granddaughter.

Mom gives and gives and seldom asks anything for herself. This would be an awesome surprise for her. Please vote for my mom, Judy!

  49. Traci says:

I Vote for Judy! GOD Bless!

Entry for Sally

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

My mom deserves to be the winner that I can’t even describe it!! She is the mom of four kids…….. a 5 year old, 12 year old, 17 year old, and a 19 year old!
This is my moms day, first she wakes up at 4:30, runs, cleans the house, and makes our lunches. Then she wakes us up and gets my little sister ready for school! For the rest of the day she is running errands! Then takes me to theatre then to soccer and after that I walk to our school’s gym where she is the coach of my volleyball team! She volunteers in everything and is always very active and  ready to do her job. She makes all three meals and gives us snacks. She does the laundry and the dishes, we do not even help her. It is a shame to say, but we are very selfish and do not realize how lucky we are. I can go on about how hard my mom works, but the big thing she really works hard at is teaching us our morals and values. You hear about kids drunk driving, smoking marijuana, and so much more. My mom teaches us to dress appropriately, do the right thing, try our best, and so much more life lessons. There probably are hard working moms out there besides mine, but some moms do forget one thing, morals and values.
My mom wants this and deserves it because she grew up with 7 kids and never got a spa with so many people in the family. My mom deserves this  because she is so hardworking. Us kids just want to give her a break she truly has raised us the right way. My sister in college watches kids get drunk and realizes how blest she was to end up in this family. I realize how blest I am with my mom. I owe her for everything she has done for me. That is why I entered my mom in this contest. So she knows how lucky I realize I am to have her as a mom.

I love you Mrs. C.! You are the best second mother I have ever had—I am so excited to spend basically the whole summer living at your house! You deserve this and I hope you win!

  2. Emily says:

Along with my sister, I would have to vote for my mom as well! Not only is she the most caring, thoughtful, hardworking woman I know, but she has been a role model to me my whole life. She has now raised me to be an independent, hardworking lady, and taught me that no matter what life throws at you always know there is something worse in the world. She has taught me to always place others before myself and that I will always have her and my family who always will love me and support me in everything I do. Not once has she ever put herself before others, she is constantly giving, smiling and laughing to make the world a better place! She is not only my mother now, but my best friend! I don’t know what I would do without her!

Entry for Amy

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

MS  should stand for “Mystery Sickness” as there seem to be no 2 cases alike, with no real cure. How can a young mother of 4 beautiful boys under the age of 7 deserve such a challenge in just handling her daily functions??  It is a cruel disease, with every day presenting a different possible symptom & making just walking a real chore.

My niece, Amy, is 32 yrs old, is an outstanding kindergarten teacher who absolutely loves children.  She never turns her back on a child in need of a hug, when she herself could sure use one most ever minute of every day. Many entries have very sad medical stories, all of which are equally deserving, however……….. Amy’s story doesn’t end with just her illness.  Her oldest son had a traumatic head injury from a freak accident a couple of years ago.  He was life lined to Children’s Hospital in Louisville where he stayed a couple weeks.  Their home was in Noblesville at the time.  Amy was pregnant with their 4th child and was supposed to be on bed rest.  How do you leave your son’s bedside?  You don’t, she didn’t.  She had 2 other little ones at home.

Just as her family life was becoming a bit normal again after her son’s long rehab, she started feeling anything but normal.  After many tests, and multiple doctor visits, it was determined she had MS.   Not long after her diagnosis, her mom, my dear sister, was told she had joined the ranks of so many other women with breast cancer.  Both of their battles have raged on in full speed this past year.  At a time when a daughter needs her mother, her mother in turn needs her daughter.  This is hard for me as the Aunt and sister to watch unfold and ask the question, “Why?  Why are both being burdened in this evil way?” I would love for Amy to be pampered and “rejuvenated”!!  Her 4 boys and husband need her happy and healthy.  Her kindergarten class needs her creative and caring ways again.  Please take time to vote for Amy!  M. age  7, K. age 6, C. age 4 & N. age 2 would love they mommy to feel good about herself.

I am voting for Amy because she is a wonderful person. First, to take such great care of 4 boys, even without MS, is a full time job. The fact that she is also a teacher is wonderful. She deserves something special for all she gives to others.

  10. Sally Jasnica Pupillo says:

Give this prize to Judy. She really deserves it. I have known her daughter for over 25 years and everything single word her daughter Missy is saying about her is true.

  11. Jerry Magers says:

My sincere desire is for this tragic story to ultimately have a happy ending. My sister has had MS for over thiry years and she is now in a nursing home. I have been witness to what this insidious disease is capable of doing. My wife lost her mother and her sister to breast cancer and not a day goes by that I am not fearful of a similar diagnosis for my wife.

Let us all pray that ongoing medical technology will sooner than later solve the mystery of both of these diseases. In the meantime let us all keep Amy and her mother in our prayers.

  12. Chris Harrington says:

Amy has been under a tremendous amount of stress for the past month and a half. Started out with bronchitis which developed into pleurisy and then landed her in the hospital for 8 days. Having MS makes a cold or anything worse. She was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Her four little boys and husband need their mommy back. This would really help lift her spirits! She has had to take a medical leave for the rest of her teaching job because of this latest episode.
    Thank you for your vote.

  13. Karen Smith says:

Amy is so deserving of a Total Mom Rejuvenation! She’s a wonderful wife, mother, and daughter who is struggling at this time with MS, fibromyalgia, and the daily routine of caring for 4 young children ages 7 and under. A day of pampering would do so much for her mental health.
