My View: Shannon Frederick LMT

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

She’s our Tui Na queen – and notorious for digging deep when it comes to our weekly Massages!  Shannon Frederick shares some insight about her background and what Massage Therapy can do for you…

Why I became a Massage Therapist:

I always had a fascination with bodywork, but never found the opportunity to study it until I moved to Northern California.  It was like being a kid in a candy store….so many really amazing people to learn from and to study with – I just had to explore the field. Through that exploration, I discovered that I had a knack for it, and here I am almost 12 years later doing what I love.

My favorite form of Massage / Bodywork is…

I love all types of bodywork.  I tend to stay away from “energy” type work.  Not that it’s not ‘real’; it’s just not my thing.  I like to explore muscles and how they move.  I really love deep work and Tui Na, of course.

Tui Na is an Asian form of bodywork that resembles what most people are familiar with as ‘Swedish’ massage work.  Its intent is more therapeutic than relaxing, and allows me to focus on many ‘chronic pain’ types of issues.  It’s particularly great for the back, neck and shoulders – and can even help with issues like insomnia, constipation, headaches (even migraines) and the chronic tension associated with high levels of stress.  I am really lucky to be one of very few Tui Na practitioners in Indiana, and my guests come back to me because of it.

What is the public’s biggest misconception about Massage Therapy?

First, that it’s only something the privileged and ‘wealthy’ enjoy!  Massage Therapy is one of the most basic forms of caring for yourself, and my guests come from a very diverse variety of backgrounds… from retirees to factory workers to high-level executives.

Secondly- of course -there is NO “happy ending” during a bodywork treatment!  It’s nearly 2012 people, time to wake up and embrace the benefits of bodywork, it’s not about sex!  If you’re ever unsure about a therapist, ask to see their credentials and license.  Indiana finally came around a few years ago and required all ‘Professional’ Massage Therapists to hold state licensure.

Best health benefits I have witnessed with regular massage therapy:

I have seen so many over the years.  Sure, I see people who used to have shoulder impingement’s or hip problems start to be able to move, or relief from Carpal Tunnel, but what I have found to be the biggest health benefit to receiving regular massage is that people become aware of their bodies.  They start to make a mind body connection and realize that you don’t always need surgery or drugs to “fix” things.  Sometimes we just need to become aware of ourselves and start connecting to our bodies.

My favorite Spa product is?

Aveda Blue Oil  [Aveda's stress-relieving blue oil helps dissolve tension and raise energy levels with the balancing aromas of refreshing peppermint and soothing blue chamomile.]

What are the best things a guest can do to get the most benefit from massage?

Breathe during your massage- nice big belly breaths.  It helps you relax and ‘let go’ – which helps me get deeper into the muscle.

Water, water, water, water after your massage… (You may want a glass of wine, but it’s not the best choice – there’s that ‘body awareness’ again!)

Entry for Danyil

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

I have known my wife Danyil since 8th grade. I have always loved her and knew I wanted her for my wife. She is an  ex-model and has been used and abused her whole life. Her mother used to beat her, make her do all the house work while her 2 brothers got to play. Her mom never attended any school or sporting events she did and constantly puts her down to this day.
She got pregnant at 24 and came home one day to find her fiance had packed his bags and left. Her modeling career was over because she now worked 2 jobs just to make it. She endured a failed marriage and substance abuse issues.

Later in life, our paths crossed by chance at a local store when we were both out with our children.  After that day and I knew GOD had brought her back to me. I watched our lovely little girls play like they knew each other for years. I knew I would marry her. I invited her to church that week where she was saved and baptized, and ended her substance abuse cold turkey  ”clean to this day with no desire to turn back”.

Blending our two extended families has sometimes been a challenge! . She cares for our four children on a daily basis, and has been faced with difficulties and depression since she was a child. She lost her figure for the sake of our children and she is a stay home mom who starts beauty college next month . I won’t list all the things she does as a mother and wife because common sense tells us what all a mom of 4 does from morning to night.

To get a special day to herself and to look beautiful would mean a lot more to her than just a pampered day; she would remember it for life. She deserves way more than I can provide on a blue collar wage. She needs a break. Please consider her for this gift.

Thank You Very Much,

Jason

Entry for Lisa

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Why my mother deserves to win a Total Mom Rejuvenation:  My mother, Lisa, is a beautiful woman and a mom of two, a son and a daughter.

While getting married at a young age and becoming pregnant soon after, she did not let that stop her drive to succeed.  After my brother and I were born my mother went to night school so she could get a degree to support her family.  She worked hard during the day and left work to go straight to school even though it must have been hard leaving two young ones at home.

My whole life my mother has always given to her family before herself.  She would go without as long as everyone else was taken care of.  She worked for a company for over 15 years and recently got laid off because of a company merger.

I want to nominate my mother because she would never nominate herself.  I want to give back to her for all the times she has helped me out.  She has worked so hard to help me with school expenses even when money was tight and many other things when I was younger.  She deserves a day to herself.  I love you mom.  This is why I believe she deserves a Total Mom Rejuvenation.

Entry for Zandrea K.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011
I would like to nominate Zandrea K.  for your mothers day revitalizing and rejuvenation week.

Zandrea gave birth to our beautiful baby girl 4 weeks early on Oct. 21, 2010 only after being diagnosed with Preeclampsia and being bed ridden for 2 months. Her blood pressure was through the roof and she was unbelievable swollen. Following a difficult delivery,  Zandrea had to have surgery and a blood transfusion but made a good recovery.

We were set to move from Iowa to Noblesville IN one month after delivery and though she was still healing, Zandrea stayed strong and helped move and took great care of our little 4.3 pound baby girl Faith. 3 months later she started having more problems and ended up in the hospital and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. This caused her to lose a ton of weight and for about a month she could barely move off the sofa. She still did her best to take care of our baby and kept a smile on her face. She is doing better now but has been through so much in the past 6 months she deserves a treat. Unfortunately I am not working yet since the move so this is a good opportunity for me to give back to her.

She is a truly amazing mother and person.

Entry for Laurie R.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

To the Wonderful Staff at Ology:

I am writing in response to the request for nominations for the “Total Mom Rejuvenation Contest” seen in the Current. I am nominating my wife, Laurie R. Laurie is the loving mother of 2 beautiful young children, ages 7 and 4, a very caring wife to me and a generous caregiver to her mother who now lives with us in Westfield.

Due to a very hectic schedule and a vast geographic area I cover for my company, Laurie is forced to deal with every daily dilemma that occurs in running a household and raising a family by herself. In addition to working full-time as a teacher, she also manages to run the kids to the doctor, sporting events and church activities. When I am away she has to have the kids ready, drop them off at daycare by 7:00am, work till 3:00pm, run as many errands as possible, pick the kids up by 4:00pm, dinner at 6:00 followed by homework and bath time.

Laurie’s father passed away in January and her mother moved in with our family in February, adding to her list of responsibilities.

I try to find ways to relieve her stress and provide time for relaxation, but it seems there is always something “else” we have to do.  My wife does an excellent job juggling all of her responsibilities and somehow has managed to stay sane over the years.

Entry for Rebecca

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011
I would like to nominate my daughter for the Mother’s Day Contest.
She is the most incredible Mom. She has 4 children ages 10 months, 4,5 and 14. One of her children suffers from a genetic disorder called Prader Willi Syndrome, and  is also mildly retarded. Rebecca cares for her and the other 3 practically by herself. Dad is always busy. She never has time for herself. She so deserves a little pampering. Please choose my daughter. She truly is the most wonderful person. I don’t know how I could get so lucky.

I would like to vote for my wife Rebecca Lennon. She is the most wonderful mother ever. Not only does she take care of our 4 kids she has fibromyalgia and headaches on top of it all. She really could use some spa time. I wish I could afford to send her but I can’t. Please choose my amazing wife.

  2. Amy Greene says:

I would like to vote for Rebecca also. She is a great mother, wife, daughter, and friend. She takes the time to help others whenever she can. She deserves a day for herself.

  3. Beth Ann says:

My Niece Rebecca has overcome many difficult obstacles thrown at her starting at a very young age.
The loss of her beloved Grandparents, with whom she was extremely close to, at a very tender young age and finally reuniting with her Father sadly at the end of his life.
She walked through a very hard and unfair childhood struggled through it and has landed on the other side arms open giving freely.
I believe because if her difficultities early on she has matured into a very caring & compassionate Mother. With her open heart and generous spirit she a shining light. I hope you will give her a day she deserves.

Entry for Crystal

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

On behalf of my 5yr old and 2yr old, I would like to nominate my wonderful wife and the mother of our 2 children,  Crystal.

On top of being a mother of 2, Crystal works 40+ hours a week and for the past several months she has been training to run the mini marathon in Indianapolis. Our girls are active in dance, soccer, swim and tee ball and she does not miss any of their activities.

Crystal is always on the go and would rather do something for her family then herself.  Crystal very seldom has time just for herself to relax and is so deserving of this relaxing, revitalizing and rejuvenating week.  Thanks for your time.

Entry for DOLLIE S.

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011
I want to nominate my mother Dollie.
Her whole life,  she has always taken care of my sister and I, while working 6 days a week. And then I had children of my own- and she has helped me take care of them for the last  18 years.
Without her, I can’t imagine where we would be. I would love to see her have a makeover that she so deserves.

  2. Jody DeBord-Young says:

I love Dollie just as my own mommy – Dollie helped to take care of me when I was younger after my parents got divorced and my mom was struggling. I will forever be thankful for Dollie…………..love you

  3. Kelley says:

  4. Lisa Newkirk says:

I think Dollie would be a perfect candidate for this makeover. I have known her for a long time. She is such a great mother/grandmother. Always putting her family before herself. She most def deserves this makeover!!

  5. Moe says:

After reading these comments and Lola’s submission, I think Dollie would look at this and think she would not deserve it. She takes care of her kids, her husband, her family, her friends, her home, her business that she and her husband own, etc. etc. It is what she does, she doesn’t know any other way, so anyone saying she deserves something for all of her love/work – she would just say it is her life.
So on that note – she deserves the world and if a makeover is included in that, good for her.

  6. Maryann Gaines says:

Dollie is the epitome of the perfect Mom! She is always serving others and never takes the time for herself. Dollie deserves this make-over more than any Mom in Indy!

I haven’t met one person in my life with a heart like my mother. I truly am blessed to be her daughter. Love you Mom!!

  16. Leslie says:

I think this would be AMAZING for my mom Dollie Settle!! Shes a very loving person! She’s has been always there 100% for her family and friends. She is my mother and my best friend. She is beautiful inside and out no doubt but I think this would make her feel soo much better about herself. Love you momma : )

I’ve met Dolly a couple times and she has always been very sweet and gracious to me. I am a friend of her daughter Lola, but feel I am also her friend as well. 22. Jaycee says:

I vote Dollie ALL THE WAYY!!! we love you :)

  23. DONNA HARRISON says:

Dollie is my little sister. She is a loving and kind person and a wonderful Mother and friend and an even better Sister. We have a wonderful mother that taught us well how to be a good Mom. Dollie lives her life to take care of others and she so deserves to be taken care of and pampered. She probably doesn’t think that because she is also humble. I hope that you can see from the comments that she has touched many lives. Just to testify to her kindness. We were at a family birthday party and a young mother was there who was very stressed because her baby was not feeling well and she wasn’t sure what to do. Everyone offered advise but as the young woman left the party I saw my sister follow her out and hand her some money to go to the pharmacy and get some medicine for her baby. She does acts of kindness like this all the time. I love her and hope that she can have a chance to be treated special because she truly is special.

  24. Janet G. says:

I have never had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Dollie, but I have heard wonderful things about her.
I know she has raised a wonderful daughter(s) who wants nothing but the best for her mother! I too hope she wins this make over…she certainly deserves it!

  25. Teresa S. says:

    Very deserving.

  26. Tammy May says:

Dollie is a very sweet person. You will not find anyone with a bigger heart!!!! She will help anyone that needs it! No question ask!!! She is my sister in law. But, I feel like she is my sister! If anyone deserves a makeover it’s Dollie!!! We all love her she is the best!!!

ENTRY FOR: APRIL M.

Monday, April 4th, 2011

I’m writing to enter my daughter, April M.. She and husband are parents to 7 amazing children from 20 months to almost 18 years old.  April home schools her children and each are remarkable in all kinds of ways.

April just had her 3rd miscarriage, and most people would say not a big deal since she has been blessed with 7 children. But it does effect her. These were children that God blessed her with for a very short time, and even though she knows they are in HIS hands, she still misses them.
Over year ago, one of her children was diagnosed with Autism. She has studied everything she cold get her hands on to educate her and our family on this, worked with several doctors, and this child has bloomed so much! A year ago this child  would not let me touch him, now when I come he runs to me, throws his arms in the air yelling Grandma and kisses me. April has made this happen with her determination, love of her family, and the devotion of her husband who works close to 60 hours a week. If Dads cold be nominated, he would be right on the list also!!!

If a mother could use a special spa day, April is definitely one of them!!!

ENTRY for Debbie M.

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

I feel that my Mom has long deserved to be pampered and taken care of, this has been for years coming. I am 33 years old. I was born premature with a heart problem, I was born at 6 months and was a preemie. My parents (both of them) were there with me and was by my side, night and every day for a very long time until, I was released from the hospital.

I had lots of restrictions growing up as a kid. I couldn’t do as most other kids. My Mom was always there for me, no matter what. I went in for open heart surgery at Riley Hospital when I was 8 years old. She was there the whole time, night and day, good and bad. She washed my hair for me, got me anything I needed.  I was in the hospital close to a week, came home and she was there through the recuperating process.

I am 33 now and still have a very close relationship with both of my parents, My Mom is my inspiration and if I end up being just as great and caring as her, I will have made a very great accomplishment  in my life. As she grows older, I will be there throught thick and then. I won’t ever leave her side because she never left mine.
